English
The children will be continuing to work on their grammar and punctuation knowledge and applying it in their daily writing. Some of the areas we will be focusing on are: using standard English, expanded noun phrases, fronted adverbials, apostrophes and direct or reported speech. This term's book is the whale by Ethan and Vita Murrow, where two young adventurous set sail in search of a reported whale, only to find themselves in a spot of trouble.
In spelling we use the Headstart Primary scheme. The spelling words for each week, please see the attached documents below.

In our reading lessons, we focus on the reading sills required to help the children improve their understanding of texts. Each lesson works on the different skills required of texts. Each lesson works on the different skills required to become a successful reader including: Understanding the text, making informed predictions, identifying facts; opinions and speech and finally exploring the use of the authors language. Maths
This term the children will be focusing on: Place Value, Fractions and Decimals, Addition and Subtraction, Multiplication and Division, Measurements, Geometry and Statistics.
The class will have a weekly arithmetic and times table lesson every week, in addition to the typical Maths lessons.
Over the coming year their will be a heavy focus on times tables – going up to 12x12. At the end of the year the children will complete a statutory times table calculation check. The check is composed of 25 random times tables questions, with only 6 seconds per question.

Science
This term the children will be studying: Grouping and classifying living things, aswell as states of matter. The class will be carrying out scientific investigations, raising queries and finding out about important scientists that have changed the world we live in.
RE
In RE, the children will be exploring: People of god
The key questions are: What is a person of god? and
How do people of god worship and celebrate?
P.E.
During PE, the children will be working on their fitness, co-ordination skills and strategy. This will be taught by Mrs Riddle every Wednesday afternoon and alternating Monday afternoons. The children should come into school, in their PE kit, on PE days.
PE lessons are outdoors.
Pe kits should include:
A team coloured t-shirt or a white t-shirt
Black shorts
Trainers – Not pumps or slip on shoes
School Hoodie
Woods
We will be going into the woods throughout the year for a variety of lessons. On these days children should have:
A suitable waterproof rain coat
Wellies or outdoors shoes
Reading at home
Reading with your child at home if very important as it encourages learning in all aspects of school life.
Asking questions and talking about books is a great way to explore your child’s understanding of the book and will enhance their comprehension skills. You can find suggested questions inside the reading record book. The home reading reward scheme will start as books are sent out this term. The children in year 4 will be rewarded every 5 books they read and will be able to bring a small teddy reading buddy for a day. The reading record books must be signed by an adult to count.
Hygiene
We will be still encouraging personal hygiene and regular washing of hands.
