Autumn Term 2023
Here is a summary of what we will be learning this term but please see the curriculum overview below for further detail.
English
Writing
In writing lessons, we will be reading 'The Iron Man' by Ted Hughes to inspire our writing. We will be working towards the following writing outcomes:
- To write an approaching threat narrative
- To explain how to capture the Iron Man
We will be learning to use the following grammar and punctuation:
- forming nouns using a range of prefixes eg. auto-, super- and anti-
- conjunctions eg. when, before, after, while, so, if, although
- the present perfect tense
We will also be reinforcing the following punctuation from Year 2:
- capital letters, full stops, question marks, exclamation marks
- apostrophes for contractions and singular possession
In addition to our writing lessons, we also have one focused grammar lesson per week as well as daily spelling lessons. We use a variety of strategies and games to learn the year 3 spelling rules and every week there will be a test on the week's words. You will see the weekly sets of words attached below.
Reading
In whole class reading lessons, we will develop our decoding and comprehension skills. We will be focusing particularly on non-fiction and fiction this term, exploring the below texts. We will explain word meanings in context, retrieve and record information and make justified inferences.
It is also important that you enjoy books at home with your child. As well as listening to your child read, consider the following:
- asking them who, what, when, where, why questions;
- asking them to predict what might happen next;
- asking them to summarise what has just happened;
- discussing the meaning of words.
If English is not your first language, please consider reading to your child in your native language and discussing what has been read.
Maths
In our maths lessons, we will develop our knowledge and skills in the following areas:
- Place value and number;
- Addition and subtraction;
- Multiplication and division;
- Fractions;
- Measurement;
- Geometry; and
- Statistics.
We will have lesson one lesson a week focused on learning arithmetic strategies, three lessons developing our problem-solving and reasoning skills and one lesson practising our times tables. It is important that children have opportunities, both inside and outside school, to practise their times tables in anticipation of the statutory times tables check in Year 4. There are lots of fun games that children can play to learn times tables, a selection of which can be found at https://www.timestables.co.uk/
Science
In science, we will be exploring the following topics: skeletons and movement, nutrition and diet, food waste and rocks. Where possible, we will learn through lots of hands-on, scientific enquiry.
R.E
In RE, we will begin by studying a 'People of God' unit, reflecting upon the question: What is it like to follow God?
We will then focus our learning around Christmas.
History
In history, we will be going on a learning journey from the Stone Age to the Iron Age. We will be comparing the different prehistorical periods, focusing particularly on the life of a child and homes. Our end of unit challenge will be to justify which age we would rather live in.
Art
In art lessons, we will be focusing on form, pattern and line, developing our sculpture skills when working with clay. Our end of unit challenge will be to produce a Stone Age clay model.
D&T
In D&T lessons, we will be investigating pneumatic systems. Our end of unit challenge will be to produce a Stone Age beast that moves using pneumatics.
Geography
In geography, we will be getting to know the United Kingdom by naming and locating UK counties and cities and land use. We will also be brushing up on our compass skills. Our end of unit challenge will be to label a map with 8 UK cities and 6 UK counties and describe some land uses.
P.E
Year 3 will have P.E every Wednesday and alternate Mondays. Please refer to the weekly newsletter to see whether Year 3 have P.E this Monday.
P.E lessons are outdoors and children should come in to school in their P.E kit on these days.
