Phonics will be delivered daily and will be having a focus by revisiting phase 3 sounds and moving onto Phase 4 and 5 sounds. We will also be looking at high frequency words and tricky words to support the children's reading and spellings.

The children will also be looking at nonsense words to get them prepared for their phonics screening at the end of the school year. The children will be encouraged to complete their phonics packs at home to support their in school.

During Little Wandle reading, we will be developing our reading skills through discussing the books that we are reading and using sounds to segment words and blend them back together. We will have a lesson on Prosody and comprehension.

This term we will be focusing on Fractions, Money, Multiplication and Division, Addition and Subtraction,

place value up to 100, position and direction and time. The children will also be applying their knowledge to solve word problems.

It would be really helpful if you could practise some of these things at home:

Counting forwards and backwards to 100

Recognising numbers to 100

Writing numbers in digits and words up to 100

Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division

Telling the time

Find ½ a set of objects

Recognise and know the value of different denominations of coins and notes

The children will also have a multiplication focus lesson on a Monday morning where we will learn times tables song, array, counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. We will also complete problem solving activities.

During PE, the children will be learning Athletics and striking and fielding. This will be taught by Mrs Riddle on a Thursday afternoon.

PE lessons are outdoors and the children will be coming into school on this day in their PE kits.

PE kits should include:

A white t-shirt

Black shorts

Trainers (not pumps or slip on shoes)

A warm tracksuit for colder days

Homework is given out on a Friday and needs to be completed and returned on Monday.

The children will all have a reading book at the appropriate level. Reading with your child is very important as it helps them develop their learning in all areas of the curriculum.

Talking with your child and asking them questions about the book will enhance their comprehension skills. Reading books need to be in school every day so that they can be changed.

We will be encouraging personal hygiene and regular washing of hands. It would be great if you could also encourage this at home. Please see video at the bottom of the page!

I am looking forward to teaching your child this year for their journey in Year 1!
