Junior 2 - Stop!, by Mr Norbury

Over the past half term, J2 have been looking at rap, with an emphasis on grime music. We have listened to many artists and songs including; 'Gotta Be Me' by Secret Agent 23 Skidoo and 'Mas Que Nada' by Sergio Mendes ft The Black Eyed Peas.

We learnt to use Charanga's pupil system 'Yumu' and how to use 'Quickbeats' which is a drum machine for the children to create their own beats and raps.

We learnt the main song 'Stop!', a special anti bullying song with a mix of singing, rap and grime. 

Finally, we created our own verse which is featured on the finally version below.

Junior 2 - Mamma Mia - Final Performance, by Mr Norbury

Today was our last week of this song and it is time to link everything together. We have learnt the song words, the musical score and how to perform each part. After 6 weeks, here are our final performances. Please enjoy!

Junior 2 - Mamma Mia - Glockenspiels, by Mr Norbury

This week, Junior 2 have been looking at the glockenspiels. They have been looking at how to play the instrument, how to read a musical score and what the notes mean. They have also been following patterns and copying them back on the glocks.  Below are their first attempts, please enjoy.

Junior 2 - Mammia Mia Singing, by Mr Norbury

Junior 2 this half term are looking at the music of ABBA. They have been focussing on the song 'Mammia Mia', this is very popular as you will be able hear from the audio track below. After just two weeks, I think they have done really well.

Junior 2 - Fresh Prince of Bel Air, by Mr Norbury

Over the past weeks, we have been looking at Hip Hop and Rap. We have focussed on 'The Fresh Prince of Bel Air' from the TV show of the same name, starring Will Smith. To enhance this this children been listening to a variety of other rap and hip/hop songs including, 'Me, myself and I' by De La Soul, 'Ready or Not' by The Fugees, 'Rapper's Delight' by The Sugarhill Gang, 'It's Like That' by Run DMC and ' U Can't Touch This' by MC Hammer. 

We have also learnt to play a musical section on the glockenspiels and read some musical notation.

Junior 2 Music - Fresh Prince of Bel Air, by Mr Norbury

This week, we compared ‘Ready or Not’ by The Fugees, to the style rap from Fresh Prince.

We practised the verses and saw where the instrumental solo for the glocks will happens. We then practised our parts on the glocks. It's all going well.

KS2 British Artists Paula Rego ‘Telling Stories in Pictures’, by Mrs Osborne

This afternoon, the KS2 pupils have been learning about the British Artist, Paul’s Rego. They learnt about her life and looked at some of her paintings. They then listened to a story about a monkey and a crocodile and designed a front cover for the story of the book. The children included a title, some pictures and said who illustrated the book. Some children included some speech bubbles and thought bubbles. Well done KS2!

Year 5 Trip to Bickley Hall Farm, by Mrs Jenkins

Year 5 enjoyed a very warm and exciting visit to Bickley Hall Farm on Thursday 19th April. The visit was linked to the Science topic of Plants and Animals covered in the Spring Term. During the visit the children took part in picking rhubarb and using it to make rhubarb crumble (then eaten after lunch), sheep feeding, and pond dipping.

We had a great day with excellent behaviour from all the children (and Mrs Jenkins and Mrs Elliott too!!)

 

Year 4 Computing - Crowdsourcing, by Mr Norbury

This week, in computing, we have looked into crowdsourcing and the advantages it brings to all areas of computing. We have learned that animators and astro-physicist use crowdsourcing alot to complete complex tasks.

We have tried to put this into practise by completing a number of challenges, involving sorting coloured pegs.

We looked at how functions are used in songs. We listened to two songs and tried to work out the function(Chorus) was.

In Year 4, we have been learning about the history of animation and how to create them. 

We created storyboards and made our own short animations. We have discovered just how many frames are needed to create a small amount of footage. I think we have a few budding animators for the future.

Our Day With Curious Critters, by Mr Norbury

On Wednesday, Year 1 and Year 2 welcomed Dan from Curious Critters, to St John's. 

He showed us how to search for and identify minibeasts in our woodland area, then we learnt how to look after a pet. Dan had brought Fluffy the rabbit to assist us and I think Fluffy was very happy afterwards.

We were then given an opportunity to have close encounters with other animals Dan had brought with him. It helped understand more about these creatures and face our fears. ( Including staff!!!)

Computing-Algorithms, Persistance and Debugging, by Mr Norbury

This week in Computing, we looked at Algorithms, Persistance and Debugging.  The children were given rules to follow to build a tower, that could hold an object. The lesson focussed around the idea that we need to make mistakes to learn how to improve.

The children were asked to build a tower that was made of only pencils and tape, it had to be more the 10cm tall and hold the object for 10 secs. As you can see from the pictures, we had great fun trying to make our towers, and learning that failure is a good thing that makes us better.

Year 2 Environmental study Autumn 2, by Mr Norbury

Navigation Skill, by Mr Norbury

Today, Year 2 have been taking part in navigation skills training.

They have identified places they have been in the local, national and global environment.

They then spent time using compasses to find north, south, east and west.

After lunch, we learnt more about compass points and drawing maps using os(ordinance survey) symbols.

Year 2 Caterpillar Journeys., by Mr Norbury

In Year 2, we have been looking at animal life cycles. 

We have watched our butterfly eggs hatch, caterpillars eat and grow, chrysalis made and butterflies hatch. It's been an exciting journey and we have loved observing the changes almost day by day.
