Hello and welcome to Year 2 and Mrs Osborne's class page!

This year we will be learning about some very exciting topics including;

Autumn: Fire! Fire! (The Great Fire of London)

Spring: Where in the World could Sonny live? (Meerkats)

Summer: Where will my wellies take me? (Our World)

This term our topic is entitled 'Where in the World could Sonny live?' and is based on the story Meerkat Mail by Emily Gravett. The children will learn all about meerkats and will also learn about different places in our country and other countries around the world.

In English we will be using the Meerkat Mail story as a stimulus for our writing. We will be writing a description of a meerkat. We will be retelling the story of the places that Sunny visits in our own words and we will pretend to be Sunny and write a postcard to one of our family to say where we have been. Before half term we will be writing some instructions about how to organise a meerkat party. During the second part of the Spring half term we will be writing a recount about our half term holidays and we will hopefully be having a visit from some meerkats. We will use this to write our own recount. Before the Easter holiday we will write our own story about our class mascot Franklin who always learns from his mistakes.

Our learning challenge lessons, which include Geography, Art and Design, Music and Design and Technology will also be based on the Meerkat Mail topic. We will consider what it is like for meerkats to live in hot places like the Kalahari desert and we will use this to make comparisons to our country and other places in the world. We are also going to study some famous explorers this term, such as Neil Armstrong and Christopher Columbus. We will use maps and the internet to find out more about our county and we will compare it to other countries in the world.

We will also continue to learn about the importance of being safe on the Internet and E-Safety and we will have focused Computer Programming lessons. We will also use technology to support our learning in other areas of the curriculum.

Mathematics lessons focus on numbers, calculations, shape and space, measures and data handling and applying these skills to solving problems. Spellings and Phonics lessons are extremely important in Year 2 as it helps to develop the children's spelling, reading and writing skills and they also work on these skills in Guided Reading time.

It is really important that the children read as much at home as they can and change their books every day. If your child has a phonics pack it is also important to continue to practise this and send the pack back every day to be changed.

In Science the children work together and will focus on learning a range of Scientific skills and topics. They also have the opportunity to study an outdoor environment every half term. The focus environment for Year 2 children is the quiet area and they will be able to look at the plants, trees and insects that live there.

In RE we learn all about Christianity and the Christian values and festivals. This term we are using a brand new curriculum in Year 2 and we will be learning about 'God's Kingdom', 'Forgiveness', 'Salvation' and 'Resurrection'.

Important reminders!

Every Thursday afternoon the children undertake PE lessons which this term include athletics and outdoor games. PE lesson will be mostly outdoors this term with some indoor lessons if it is wet and it is important that the children need to have their PE kits in school every week, this should include a white t-shirt, black shorts and trainers (not pumps or slip ons). The children will also need a warm track suit for the winter months.

Homework is handed out on a Thursday to be handed back in the following Monday, this will alternate between Literacy and Numeracy each week. The children will also have spellings to practice each week which they will be tested on in Spellings on a Monday morning.

I would like the children to continue enjoying their learning in year two. I know that they will continue to learn lots of new things if they remember to work hard and enjoy spending time with their friends.

Work hard, be happy, have fun, make lots of friends and you will learn!
