Hello and welcome to Junior 1 and Mrs Osborne's class page!

This year we will be finding the answers to some very exciting questions in our learning. This is our Big Question for the Spring term;

Coast, City or Country, where would I choose to live?

This term our topic is all about the different places that people can choose to live in, these include the City, the Coast and the Country. We will continue to develop our Geographical knowledge about Sandbach and we will learn more about Manchester and Llandudno. We will learn about the physical and human features of each place, about the transport used in each location, the types of houses and tourism in each place and about the jobs which people can choose to do. Finally, we will find out about the responsibility each location has in relation to the distribution of natural resources from each place to other locations.

In English we will use the story 'Dear Greenpeace' by Simon James as inspiration for writing a letter to Emily as a representative of Greenpeace to explain to her why there can't be a whale living in her paddling pool in her garden. Also, we will write a book review stating we like and do not like about the story 'Dear Greenpeace'. Following this, we will read the book 'Greta and the Giants' by Greta Thunberg who is a 16 year old girl from Sweden who actively protests about Climate Change. We will retell this story in our own words and will then write a persuasive letter to the 'Giants' in the story to encourage them to stop cutting down trees. Then, we will read 'One Plastic Bag' by Miranda Paul to write a factual description explaining why Isatou was amazing for making plastic bag purses to recycle. After this, we will retell 'Somebody Swallowed Stanley' by Hannah Peck in our own words. We will also write a procedural recount to explain how we made a jellyfish in a bottle and finally we will make a plastic bottle sweetie monster and write an imaginative description about our monster's looks and personality.

We will also undertake lots of work in Art and Design, Design and Techonolgy, Music and Computing in relation to our locations of Sandbach, Manchester and Llandudno. In Art and Design we will study the work of John Constable, William Turner and L.S.Lowry before using our chosen medium to paint a coastal, city or coutryside landscape. In Design and Technology we will design, make and evaluate a reusable bag to promote using alternative to single-use plastics. In Computing we will use Publisher to create a poster to encourage the use of single-use plastics. In Music we will work in groups to compose and perform a piece of music showing an understanding of Coast, City and Country sounds.

We will also continue to learn about the importance of being safe on the Internet in E-Safety lessons and we will have focused Computer Programming lessons to learn about algorithms.

In Mathematics lessons we will focus on numbers, calculations, shape and space, measures and data handling and we will apply these skills to solving problems. We will also be having focussed arithmetic and times table lessons which are extremely important to the Year 3 and 4 children as they will be required to sit a statutory times table check at the end of Year 4. Grammar, Punctuation and Spellings lessons will focus on writing skills and help to ensure that we make excellent progress.  In Guided Reading time we will not only focus on ensuring that our reading is expressive and fluent but also on answering literal retrieval and inference questions. It is extremely important that you continue to read with your child at home and ask them comprehension questions about their reading using the text to find the answers.

In Science we will be focussing on learning a range of Scientific skills and topics. We will also have the opportunity to study an outdoor environment every half term. The focus environment for Year 3 is the oak tree and for Year 4 is the vegetable patch. We will be able to look at the plants, trees and insects that live there.

In RE we will continue to learn all about Christianity and the Christian values and festivals. We continue to access the Chester Diocese Scheme of work and this term the topics are ‘Creation’ and ‘Salvation’. We are also going to undertake lots of learning around Growth Mindset and our Christian Value for this term is Perseverance. We will therefore be talking about this value throughout the school week and continue to earn stars for showing Perseverance in and around school.

We will also be taking part in French lessons and this term we will focus on vocabulary relating to the topics ‘Food’ and ‘Friends and Family’.

Important reminders!

Every Monday afternoon the children undertake PE lessons which this term include Hockey and Football. PE lesson could be indoors or outdoors and so it is important that the children need to have their PE kits in school every week. This should include a white t-shirt, black shorts and trainers (not pumps or slip ons). The children will also need a warm track suit for the winter months.

Homework is handed out on a Friday to be handed back in the following Monday, this will include both English and Maths each week. The children will also have spellings and times tables to practise for weekly tests.

I hope the children have enjoyed their first term in years 3 and 4 and continue to do so during the Spring term. I know that they will learn lots of new things if they remember to work hard and enjoy spending time with their friends.

Work hard, be happy, have fun, make lots of friends and you will learn!
