Welcome to Year One's Class Page!

Our learning will focus on a big question for each term including:

Autumn: Have toys always been fun?

Spring: How do we get about?

Summer: What's good about living in Sandbach Heath?

For the Spring Term, we will continue to focus on capital letters, full stops and finger spaces. We will recap nouns, adjectives and verbs. We will also use conjunctions such as 'and' to create fantastic sentences. We will be reading a variety of books about transport such as Duck in the Truck.

Phonics and Guided Reading

During phonics and guided reading time we will be looking at developing our reading skills through discussing the books that we are reading and using sounds to segment words and blend them back together.

This term we will be focusing on numbers to 20 and above, counting forwards and backwards, addition, subtraction, multiplication (2x, 5x and 10x table), division, 2D and 3D shapes, fractions (a half and a quarter) and telling the time to the hour and half an hour. It would be really helpful if you could practise some of these things at home:

  • counting forwards and backwards
  • recognising numbers
  • writing numbers in digits and words
  • addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
  • recognising shapes and their properties
  • recognising fractions
  • telling the time

Our Learning Journey

We will also develop our learning through: Geography, History, Art and Design, Music, Computing and Design and Technology. We will be researching emergency vehicles, creating pic collages using iPads, exploring Bee-Bot's and creating journeys across the world.

This term our topic for Science is Animals Including Humans. We will also be conducting our Environmental Study which focuses on Pots and Seeds.

In RE, we will learn all about creation and salvation through the Creation Story and the Easter Story.

The children will be working with Sports Coaching North West to gain and improve valuable sports skills such as team work.

Important Reminders!

Every Thursday afternoon the children have PE lessons. PE lessons are outdoors and indoors and it is important that the children have their PE kits in school every week. For the first half term Year 1 will be indoors for PE.

PE kits should include:

  • A white t-shirt
  • Black shorts
  • Trainers (not pumps or slip on shoes)
  • A warm tracksuit for colder days

Homework is given out on a Friday and needs to be completed and returned on Monday. Homework will alternate between Phonics and Maths each week.

Phonics Packs
The children have a phonics pack that is tailored to their personal learning; it is important that you work on these at home and return them to school every Monday so that they can be updated. It would be really useful if these could stay in school bags when they are not being used so that we can access them in school time.

Reading Books
The children have all been given a reading book at the appropriate level. Reading with your child is very important as it helps them develop their learning in all areas of the curriculum. Talking with your child and asking them questions about the book will enhance their comprehension skills. Reading books need to be in school every day so that they can be changed.

Lets have an amazing term!
