Welcome to Year One's class page!

This year our topics will be:

Autumn: Fire! Fire! (The Great Fire of London)

Spring: Where in the world could Sonny live? (Meerkats)

Summer: Where willl my wellies take me? (Our World)

In English this term we will be using our phonics to help us write labels and simple sentences. We will be learning about capital letters, full stops and finger spaces and practising using these correctly. We will be using books about dragons and also writing about The Great Fire of London.

In Phonics and Guided Reading time we will be looking at reading skills, talking about the books that we are reading and using sounds to segment words and blend them back together.

In Maths this term we will be focusing on number and place value (to 20), addition and subtraction (within 10) and shape. It would be really helpful if you could practise some of these things at home:

- counting forwards and backwards

- recognising numbers

- writing numbers in digits and words

- recognising shapes and their properties

Our Learning Challenge lessons will cover: Geography, History, Design and Technology and Art and Design. We will look at colour mixing and using different materials to make our own fire pictures. We will talk about fire safety and celebrations that involve light. We will be concentrating on London and the famous landmarks as part of our Geography work.

In Science the children work together and will focus on learning a range of scientific skills and topics. This terms topic is Plants and Seasons.
Our Environmental Study will begin and we will be looking at the life cycle of seeds and bulbs.

In RE we will learn all about Christianity and the Christian Values. As part of the curriculum we will be looking at discipleship, the Holy Spirit and Creation.

In PE the children will be working with Sports Coaching North West improving our team work skills through various sports.

Important Reminders!

Every Thursday afternoon the children have PE lessons. PE lessons are outdoors and indoors and it is important that the children have their PE kits in school every week. For the first half term Year 1 will be indoors for PE.

PE kits should include:

- A white t-shirt

- Black shorts

- Trainers (not pumps or slip on shoes)

- A warm tracksuit for colder days

Homework is given out on a Thursday and needs to be completed and returned on Monday. Homework will alternate between English and Maths each week.

Phonics Packs
The children have a phonics pack that is tailored to their personal learning; it is important that you work on these at home and return them to school every Monday so that they can be updated. It would be really useful if these could stay in school bags when they are not being used so that we can access them in school time.

Reading Books
The children have all been given a reading book at the appropriate level. Reading with your child is very important as it helps them develop their learning in all areas of the curriculum. Talking with your child and asking them questions about the book will enhance their comprehension skills. Reading books need to be in school every day so that they can be changed.

Lets have an amazing term!
