Year 4 Computing - Crowdsourcing

Date: 8th Feb 2018 @ 3:01pm

This week, in computing, we have looked into crowdsourcing and the advantages it brings to all areas of computing. We have learned that animators and astro-physicist use crowdsourcing alot to complete complex tasks.

We have tried to put this into practise by completing a number of challenges, involving sorting coloured pegs.

Here are some pictures and a video of our attempts

Our Day With Curious Critters

Date: 5th May 2016 @ 7:17pm

On Wednesday, Year 1 and Year 2 welcomed Dan from Curious Critters, to St John's.

He showed us how to search for and identify minibeasts in our woodland area, then we learnt how to look after a pet. Dan had brought Fluffy the rabbit to assist us and I think Fluffy was very happy afterwards.

We were then given an opportunity to have close encounters with other animals Dan had brought with him. It helped understand more about these creatures and face our fears. ( Including staff!!!)

Please enjoy our pictures and video slide show of our amazing day!!

Thank you Curious Critters!!!

Computing-Algorithms, Persistance and Debugging

Date: 29th Nov 2015 @ 11:27am

This week in Computing, we looked at Algorithms, Persistance and Debugging.  The children were given rules to follow to build a tower, that could hold an object. The lesson focussed around the idea that we need to make mistakes to learn how to improve.

The children were asked to build a tower that was made of only pencils and tape, it had to be more the 10cm tall and hold the object for 10 secs. As you can see from the pictures, we had great fun trying to make our towers, and learning that failure is a good thing that makes us better.

On Monday we went out exploring our Environmental Study area for the third time this year, and we noticed lots of changes! There isn't much colour there now, although we did see a few green shoots peeking through. There was a lot of things that had fallen during Autumn , so we collected them in and made some collages - there was a lot of brown!

Sketching St Paul's Cathedral

The children were all taught how to use charcoal to sketch the way the cathedral used to look. We had great fun and got very black fingers (and a black nose or two!!)

The cakes that could have started The Great Fire of London

Date: 27th Nov 2014 @ 8:42pm

On Wednesday the children in Year 2 made some cakes! Not just any cakes...these cakes could have been the ones that were baking the day The Great Fire of London started. The children had great fun following the recipe and using some 'historical' ways to mix the dough! I didn't taste the cakes, but the children tell me  they were delicious! Maybe we will see these 1666 cakes on the Great British Bake Off next year!!
