Ancient Egyptian Mummification, by Miss Ollier

Date: 23rd Sep 2015 @ 9:01pm

This afternoon in our class we have been learning more about the famous pharaoh, Tutankhamen/Tutankhamun and trying to find out about the possible ways that he died. Historians seem to suggest lots of different ways. Some say that he broke his leg and it got infected, some say that he had an illness, other say that he fell off his chariot and broke his leg and others say that he got bitten by a snake! It's tricky to know!

We then found out about mummification and how the bodies were prepared for the afterlife. The childen had lots of fun watching a Horrible Histories video about Tutankhamen and also had the chance to pretend to mummify one of their class friends whilst using an interactive website game. We then made small mummys out of clay and we will be wrapping them in bandages next week. Watch our blog for more photographs. For now click on the links to watch the Horrible Histories video and to play the mummification game.

Computing- Algorithms and De-Bugging, by Miss Ollier

Date: 21st Sep 2015 @ 9:27am

Last week on Thursday afternoon the children in Year 3 had their second computing lesson. The children were applying their understanding of algorithms to ordering instructions so that they could make a paper aeroplane. They were also learning about de-bugging and how sometimes algorithms need to be checked and re-ordered so that the program works. The children were able to decorate their aeroplanes and undertake a test flight at play time. Have a look at the photographs below to see more;

Date: 12th Sep 2015 @ 10:45am

On the afternoon of Friday 11th September the Year 3 children took part in their first Computing lesson. The children had to oportunity to learn about what an algorithm and program were.

Algorithm- A list of steps that you can follow to finish a task.

Program- An algorithm that has been coded into something that can be run by a machine.

The children then wrote their own algorithms to move a star around a board game to colour in the designated black squares. The children found this very interesting and exciting. Look at the pictures below to see the children's algorithms;

Year 4 Science Electricity, by Miss Ollier

E-Safety- Emails, by Miss Ollier

Date: 29th Apr 2015 @ 6:43pm

This afternoon the children in Junior 1 took part in their fourth e-safety lesson of the year. The children learnt about emails and how they are an excellent way of communicating with others online. They also learnt however that they need to be careful with what they say to people online so as not to upset anyone else or hurt their feelings. The children were very excited to learn about the school blog and also learnt how they could use it to talk to friends safely and in a secure environment but also how they could 'report' people to their teachers if they say a message which they thought was unkind.

The children also learnt about the CEOP button which is used on internet websites that they can use to report incidents on the internet. This is the CEOP website which tells you more about what they do; http://www.ceop.police.uk/

We also sent an email to Miss Johns and hope to hear back from her soon.

Great work Year 3!

Junior 1 Holy Week activites, by Miss Ollier

Date: 3rd Apr 2015 @ 5:51pm

This week has been the final week of the spring term and the children were able to take part in the annual Easter Service at St Johns Church. They were told the Easter story and discussed why Jesus died on the cross for us. The children sung Easter songs and enjoyed being in the church.

The children in Years 3 and 4 have had a special RE week where they have reflected upon the events of Holy week thought Art and Design, Computing and Literacy. The children started the week, on Monday, by listening to and reflecting upon the Holy week story. They then specifically thought about Palm Sunday. The children talked about Jesus travelling into Jerusalem on a donkey and discussed how they thought this was a little unusual as Jesus was such an important person. They also discussed why people waved palm leaves at Jesus. From this the children drew their own donkey using the laptops and collaged their own palm leaves with ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord’ written underneath.

The following morning, on Tuesday, the children discussed the events of Maundy Thursday and how Jesus had the last supper with his disciples. As a class they discussed why Jesus shared bread and wine with the disciples to symbolise his body and blood and also discussed how he washed the disciples feet to show them how much he loved them. The children were asked to draw around their own feet, decorate them expressing Jesus’s love for them and to write around their feet, ‘Jesus loves me because …’ and they were to think of their own reason. The children were also given the opportunity to wash their friend’s feet should they have wished to.

Also on Tuesday morning the children talked about Jesus praying to God in the Garden of Gethsemane. The children discussed why Jesus would have prayed and also talked about why they prayed. They thought that in a prayer you can thank and ask and discussed with a friend and the class why we pray. They then used these ideas to write new prayers for our class prayer book which we use every day.

On Wednesday afternoon the children discussed some of the Christian Values that Jesus showed to use when he died on the cross, these being love, hope, peace and salvation. They talked about what they meant to them and what colours and pictures they thought reflected these words. The children were then able to make a mobile reflecting their thoughts on these values to be displayed around the classroom. One child stated that they were going to colour their peace cross white and green. She stated that she chose white to symbolise the colour of a dove (peace symbol) and green to reflect the olive branch carried by the dove.

On Thursday morning the children talked about what happened on Easter Sunday and about how Jesus had come back to life, had been resurrected. They discussed in detail why we have Easter eggs at Easter and how they symbolise new life in a similar way to the way Jesus had come back to life. From this the children made Easter cards to take home to their family.

The children have also made Easter baskets and have discussed the Easter egg appeal that is undertaken taken by a local radio station, Signal 1 to give to children that are not as fortunate as them at Easter time. Therefore in their decorated Easter eggs the children wrote Christian Values that they felt demonstrated when they gave or helped others.

The children had the opportunity to use the Code.org website and they also had to organise a set of insturctions (an algorithm or code) that they could follow to build a paper aeroplane. Some of the children found that they had to de-bug their set of instructions because they were not in the correct order. Below are some photographs from todays lesson;
